Comparing different solar attic fans can often be confusing and sometimes misleading. One manufacturer's 20 watt model fan may not be the same as another manufacturer’s due to differences in the size of the fan blade used, the type of material used for the fan blade, and even the shape of the fan housing. When comparing solar attic fans, the most important specification to look at is the airflow rating (CFM). The CFM rating will tell you the actual performance of the fan regardless of the parts used to make it. And since some manufacturers may not be entirely truthful with their CFM ratings, below are some general guidelines to help you discern fact from fiction:

It's All About the CFM

Fan Blade Size

The size of the fan blade directly determines the amount of airflow that a fan can produce. Given two solar attic fans with the same fan housing style and solar panel power, the larger the fan blade, the greater the airflow performance.

Fan Blade Material

Fan blades fall into two general categories: those made of aluminum and those that are plastic (polymer, polyvinyl, ...). Under hot conditions (like in an attic), plastic fan blades can deform over time and lose rigidity. This adversely affects the performance of the fan blade, resulting in less airflow.

Fan Housing

The style of the fan housing affects airflow in a significant way. A venturi-style fan housing will always allow a fan to move more air than a straight cylinder fan housing due to air friction. Fans with venturi-style housings have a much larger roof hole cut-out in relation to the size of their fan blade to allow for more air intake, thus optimizing the fan's performance.

Solar Panel Power

Assuming two solar attic fans have the same style fan housing and fan blade size, the amount of power supplied by the solar panel will change airflow performance based on the fan curve for that specific product. Since fan curves are specific to each manufacturer, the actual effect of solar panel power in relation to CFM is not consistent across manufacturers.

Our solar attic fans are all metal construction using 22GA corrosion-resistant zincalume alloy (AZ50) sheet metal. The type and thickness of metal we use gives our products much more strength and durability than any competitive product, allowing Attic Breeze solar attic fans to better withstand severe weather conditions year after year.
We have engineered our fans with the latest generation of high-efficiency monocrystalline solar cells. Utilizing the higher voltage output of these cells and more efficient design, we have increased the performance of our fans by packing more power into a smaller panel area.
For additional durability, we use Tog-L-lok® metal fastening throughout our fan construction. Tog-L-lok® fastening is four times stronger than traditional spot welding giving our fans even greater structural integrity than our original design.
New building codes in some areas of the country require homeowners to have a fire safety switch installed with any active attic ventilation product. We think that's a great idea, so Attic Breeze now includes an integrated fire safety switch with every product model we offer at absolutely no cost.

Fan models with a unit-mounted solar panel feature a fully adjustable integrated panel bracket as part of our standard product package. The adjustable bracket is constructed from 16GA galvanized steel (G90) for superior strength and powder coated to match the color of your fan. In addition to its durability, this bracket system also offers a high degree of flexibilty, allowing the solar panel to be inclined up to 45 degrees.
Attic Breeze has pushed the bar yet again. Our 45W solar attic fans feature the most powerful unit-mounted solar panel in the industry, capable of producing an incredible 1925 CFM of airflow performance. We simply blow away the competition.
We believe the finish on your new Attic Breeze fan should not only compliment your roof design, but also provide you with the best resistance to the elements possible. Our powder coated baked-on finish uses the Tiger/Drylac Series 38 Super Durable coating system, a heavy-duty weather resistant finish that is AAMA 2604 compliant and conforms to stringent corrosion resistance testing. And best of all, we offer it in a wide range of color options designed to perfectly match virtually any roof decor.
Installers asked, we listened - both our self-flashing and curb-mount model fans now come standard with pre-drilled mounting holes, weatherproof caulking, mounting screws, and hole template to make your fan installaton a BREEZE!
